Socially Irresponsible

Over the last couple of days, a major controversy has been brewing regarding a specific Facebook post made by a woman by the name of Lindsey Stone, and the online reputation management of the company that employs her. If you haven’t heard this story yet, no doubt you will soon find it hard to ignore. The controversy surrounding Lindsey started when she posted a picture of herself on Facebook. In the photo Lindsey is standing at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, she is pretending to yell and flipping off the camera, in front of a sign which reads [click to continue…]

7 Ways to Kill the News Ticker on Facebook

by Timothy Martell on September 21, 2011

This homepage ticker is going to give me a migraine. It shows if you have chat open, and if you close chat, it takes residence above the ads and everything else. Seriously, that’s too distracting.

The eye is naturally drawn to movement, and Facebook has already given me attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. [click to continue…]

Do You Hate the New Facebook?

by Timothy Martell on September 21, 2011

hate FacebookComplaints about Facebook’s changes to the site today defy measurement.

Publicly visible status updates that complain appear to be going up as public status updates at least once every ten seconds.

Comments on these posts are going up much faster than we can count.

Plus we have no way to tally the number of complaining posts using the new privacy settings to limit visibility to friends.

So is the technology behind the upgrade to the news feed actually making it look like more people are complaining about the change than usual? Or has unhappiness with the site organically reached an above average level? [click to continue…]

What If It Happened Today?

by Timothy Martell on September 20, 2011

surpriseRecently I stumbled upon a letter written to the Cleveland Browns and a subsequent response letter to the consumer. I mean it was a serious bit of drizzle that inconvenienced a whole lot of people who bought a lifetime supply of toilet paper and D batteries. Hell, it even broke Vermont. VERMONT IS BROKEN, PEOPLE! And make no mistake about it — It’s Hurricane Irene’s fault. That said, there are some funny pictures that came from it. Over-hyped disasters really bring out the best in people and it seems New Yorkers are among the best of them!

Here’s a smart idea! You can always count on New Yorkers to come up with brilliant way’s to protect their stuff! [click to continue…]

Opportunities Begin with Problems

When considering from where the next big media spike will occur one simply needs to look for a big glaring problem. For it is where problems are created that new opportunities emerge. It seems clear to me now that it is the growing paradox of social networking that will spawn the next genius multi-$ billion giant. So what is the paradox? Simply, as social networks increase in size, they decrease in value. [click to continue…]

The Perfect Circle – Not On Google +

by Timothy Martell on August 24, 2011

Perfect CircleFacebook announced updated privacy settings today and for the first time one might actually consider them impressive. I mean after years of menus and menus and more menus filled with menus of drop downs with menus…(you get the point) – they have simplified the process with privacy options right at the wall page level. Of course, I expect people will still bitch and complain because hey! That’s Facebook! But at first glance, it looks good.

These changes clarified something I’d been thinking about though – the circles concept that has recently exploded on Google +. With the recent changes to Facebook they have reduced 6 sharing options down to 3 and really there are only 2 that matter: Public and Friends. [click to continue…]
